What does your role involve?
My role involves recruiting, retaining and recognising volunteer contributions all over Durrell's operations. A large part of our volunteer team operates from our headquarters at Jersey Zoo supporting day to day operations with an aim to increase our reach, resources and impact. I work with our expert staff to further improve valuable volunteer contributions and develop new roles, encouraging our diverse volunteer team to share their time, skills, knowledge and passion with us in the most effective way.
What's the favourite part of your job?
Often the most rewarding moments I have been involved in surrounds volunteer opportunities we have designed that allow individuals to really connect with Durrell in a new way, further developing their own skills and interests while supporting our conservation work. Volunteering can make a huge positive difference to people, seeing the evidence for that through a variety of different cases is incredibly rewarding.
What's your advice to anyone thinking about volunteering?
Look at the time you have available and consider what you want to get out of volunteering. Some people volunteer to meet more people, build new skills, support the charity, improve health and wellness or build confidence, the list goes on and the best opportunities will be a win/win. Ideally volunteering is something you look forward to doing on a regular basis, two or more times a month, to get the most from it.
